  • Tons of new cars to hijack and drive
  • Employs an entirely new taxi fast travel system

Cons

  • Development is currently in limbo

The Grand Theft Auto San Andreas II mod adds a wealth of new features to the celebrated open-world crime game. The results are a more fully-featured experience. While it doesn't add any new story content to the game, it's a perfect choice for players who love Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas but are getting bored with the core experience.

One of the principal goals of the project is to keep San Andreas up to speed with changes made in later iterations of the series, and it does a pretty admirable job in that regard. New weapons and guns have been imported into the core game. But the most impressive work here is reflected in more deeply ingrained systems. Navigation is one element where the experience has been seriously improved. A taxi system similar to the one featured in Grand Theft Auto IV has been integrated into the mod, giving you easier ways to navigate the enormous map of San Andreas.

Other quality of life features include new safehouses for saving your game, fast traveling across the map, and putting away cars for safekeeping. Many of the models folded into the game come from older iterations of Grand Theft Auto, but if there's one downside, it's the level of unrealized potential.

That's because the features demonstrated here are just scratching the surface of what the mod's developers intended. While their grand ambitions included upgraded textures, original cheat codes, and a first-person mode, it's unlikely that these will ever see the light of day. It's been over a decade since work has been done on the project. And San Andreas, which was already aging at the time of the mod's first release, is becoming more ancient with each passing day.
